After the rapid success in the market with its regional jets ERJ-135, -140 and -145, Embraer has embarked on the development of a new and larger family of aircraft with a capacity of 70 seats and more. The Brazilian manufacturer has secured the Swiss company Crossair as an initial customer, which includes an initial order for 30 aircraft, including the 108-seat ERJ-190 and also the smaller ERJ-170 with a capacity for 70 passengers. The second prototype ERJ-170 with the Brazilian registration PP-XJC was therefore painted in Crossair's colors. The first aircraft was to be delivered in 2004. However, due to the financial burden of Swissair's eventual bankruptcy and the subsequent takeover of the airline's assets, a complete restructuring of Crossair began. Swissair's former regional partner was transformed into the new flag carrier Swiss, which meant that the ERJ aircraft were no longer suitable for the new route, and the order was ultimately cancelled.
