The Convair 880 first flew in January 1959 and was Convair's attempt to break into a narrow body jet airliner market that was already well catered for by Boeing and Douglas. Powered by four General Electric CJ-805-3 engines which were the civilian version of the military J79 engine used by the US Air Force's B-58 Hustler, made the Convair 880 a very fast airliner with speeds of 600mph being recorded. Delta Airlines took delivery of the first production aircraft in May 1960 and various airlines operated the type until 1975 when the aircraft left commercial service with only eleven major carriers using the type and thus being deemed a failure by the airline industry with only 65 aircraft being built.
