In 2005, Audi announced that the name of the successful Audi R8 racing car would be used for the name of a road car in 2007. The Audi R8, based on the Audi LeMans Quattro concept car, appeared at the 2003 Geneva International Motor Show and also at the 2003 International auto show in Frankfurt. The R8 was officially unveiled at the Paris International Motor Show on 30 September 2006. Six-time Le Mans 24 Hours winner Jacky Ickx described the R8 as "the best handling car today".
