A boarding bridge is an enclosed connector, most often extending from an airport terminal gate to an aircraft and in some cases from a port to a ship or barge, allowing passengers to board and disembark without having to go outside and be exposed to inclement weather. Depending on the building design, threshold height, refueling location and operational requirements, a jet bridge can be fixed or movable, radially rotating or extendable. The boarding bridge was invented by Frank Der Yuen.
