The AN-72 aircraft, with the NATO reporting name "Coaler", was developed in the late 1970s as a replacement for the widely used Antonov AN-26 turboprop transport aircraft. The location of the engines in front of and above the wing gives the aircraft a unique appearance. The aircraft uses the so-called Coandă effect, named after the Romanian inventor and pioneer of aerodynamics Henri Coandă: exhaust gases from the engine are blown over the curved surface of the wing, creating greater lift, which allows the aircraft to take off (or land) over shorter distances. The National Guard of Ukraine's many tasks include protecting state borders, participating in UN peacekeeping missions, combating paramilitary or terrorist organizations, and protecting critical infrastructure such as power plants. Two Antonov AN-72 aircraft are operated alongside numerous AN-26 turboprop transport aircraft, which support the supply and deployment of the Ukrainian National Guard throughout the country.
