Century Wings CW001601 is an 1/72 scale F-14D Tomcat diecast aircraft model. The F-14 is an American supersonic twin engine, two-seat, variable-sweep wing fighter developed for the United States Navy. It first flew in December 1970 and entered service in 1974 replacing the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II. The F-14 was designed following the collapse of the F-111B program and incorporated the experience of air combat during the Vietnam War. The F-14 Tomcats were the only launch platform for the AIM-54 Phoenix. The F-14′s wing sweep could be varied from 20° to 68° in flight. It was automatically controlled to maintains optimum wing sweep but could be manually overridden if required. To save deck space when stored onboard carriers, the wings could be swept to 75° to overlap the horizontal stabilizers. The F-14 Tomcat served as the US Navy’s primary maritime air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor and tactical reconnaissance platform. Modifications late in its service life added the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) pod system. This allowed it to perform precision ground-attack missions. The Tomcat was retired from the US Navy during September 2006. It was replaced by the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
The F-14D Super Tomcat variant was the final variant. First delivered in 1991, it used the GE F110-400 engines, newer digital avionics systems including glass cockpit, the newer AN/APG-71 radar. Other systems included the Airborne Self Protection Jammer (ASPJ) and Joint Tactical Information Distribution System (JTIDS). 37 new -D variants were built and 18 F-14A models were upgraded.
