Product description

Qualt metal-plastic model of the Ilyushin IL62 United Arab Airlines airplane in white color with blue stripes.

During the Cold War, the Soviet Union kept its airspace closed to Western airlines. This forced flights between Europe and the Far East to make major detours and stop for fuel. Most airlines choose to stopover in Anchorage, Alaska, USA.

In order to offer passengers the opportunity to fly faster to the Far East, KLM and JAL Japan Air Lines have offered passengers the opportunity to fly with Aeroflot. The Russian national carrier flew from Amsterdam to Moscow and then to Tokyo. The flights were carried out with a four-engine Ilyushin Il-62. Although the pilots were provided by Aeroflot, the cabin crew on the flights were partially provided by KLM and JAL.
In the 1970s, it was unusual for two companies to have such cooperation, let alone a Western company and a national company of the Soviet Union. In addition to the Aeroflot logo, a KLM or JAL logo was also affixed to the Il-62 to celebrate the collaboration. This makes KLM and JAL two of the few Western companies ever to have their logo on an aircraft built in the Soviet Union.
